BILLS IN THE LEGISLATURE

Here are some, but not all proposed bills:

S06360 – Would allow crossbows during all crossbow seasons without restrictions regarding size and design

S04954/A01089 – Proposed ban on lead ammunition on State owned land and NYC Watershed

A00888 – Abolishes the raising of pheasants at the State’s only facility, in Ithaca

S06623/A00954 – Would allow certified handicapped individuals as operator or passenger to enter and exit public lands for hunting using an ATV

A1094 – Would allow the use of drones to locate dead, wounded or injured big game

S05402/A01229 – Would require hunters to check and tag canids for DEC to investigate any canine weighing over 50 pounds. Would also require Hunter Education to include wolf identification

S01799 – Would limit operating hours of municipal ranges, including those used by Law Enforcement training to one weekend a month and fully enclosed with proper sound abatement

S01517/A06215 – Permits hunting, fishing and outdoor education to be included in high school physical education courses

S01153/A02312 – Allows small game, fowl, deer or bear hunting, without a hunting license or Hunter Education certification and possess or control a firearm of 10 year olds if they are within arms reach of a qualified hunting mentor

S00743/A00437 – Would require firearm dealers to post signs stating “Access to rifle, shotgun or firearm in the home significantly increases the risk of suicide, death during domestic disputes, and/or unintentional deaths to children, household members and others”

S00418/A01774 – Would prohibit the purchase of more than one firearm during any period of 30 days

S05974/A05611 – Would require firearm owners to obtain liability insurance covering at least $1 million dollars in potential damages

NEW YORK STATE 16+2 HOUR TRAINING CLASS

NYS 16 hour Pistol Permit Training Class –June 2025 class schedule –

NOTICE: DUE TO THE STRONG DEMAND FOR THIS COURSE, A NEW POLICY IS BEING IMPLEMENTED – IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE THE REQUIRED $100 DEPOSIT BY ONE WEEK BEFORE THE DATE OF THE CLASS, YOUR SEAT MAY BE GIVEN TO SOMEONE ON THE WAITING LIST. WE REGRET THIS, BUT “NO SHOWS” ARE TAKING SLOTS FROM PEOPLE WHO NEED THE CLASS.

STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE BOTH DAYS TO RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE.

Coxsackie Sportsmen’s Club

NYS 16+2 hour Pre Licensing Firearms Safety Training Course

New pistol permit applicants are required by NYS to take a 16 hour training course with 2 hours of live fire instruction. The class will be divided into Saturday and Sunday, 9 hours each day, with the range portion taking place on Sunday. You MUST attend BOTH days and pass the written exam to receive full credit for the course. All ammunition, targets, range fees, firearm loan, eye and ear protection, coffee, water, snacks and lunch will be provided both days and is included with course registration. Registration is non-refundable and you must pay a $100 deposit in advance in to be registered for the course. Total cost of the class is $325.

This course is required for NEW pistol permit applicants and anyone wishing to have their restrictions removed on their current pistol permit in New York State. It will be taught by our NRA and Greene County Duly Authorized certified professional firearms instructors with decades of experience. You do NOT need to take this course if you already hold an UNRESTRICTED NYS pistol permit.

Applicants must NOT be a prohibited person regarding firearm ownership (I.E., you cannot be a felon, be convicted of domestic violence, etc.).

Topics covered will include basic firearm safety, maintenance, cleaning, safe storage, transportation, firearm-specific laws, situational awareness, interacting with law enforcement, and more. Students who do not pass the written test with an 80% and/or are unable to show the ability to safely handle and use a handgun will not pass the course.

Both days are from 8:00 AM from 5:00 PM with a working lunch around noon. The instructors will give a light presentation during lunch to get through the material.

Successful completion of our course will result in a certificate valid to submit with your New York State pistol permit application or removal of restrictions on an existing restricted pistol permit in Greene, Columbia, Albany and other counties. For other jurisdictions, please check with your local issuing authority.

ATTENTION: Please bring your application paperwork from your county of residence. This will eliminate additional trips to get the required signatures on your application!

The GCSO does not accept walk – ins! You must make an appointment first, by calling 518-943-3300 extension 606.

You can register for this course by calling 518-573-7696. A non-refundable deposit of $100 to Coxsackie Sportsmens Club, PO Box 213, Coxsackie, NY 12051 must be received before the start date. The balance can be paid by cash or check at the class. Class capacity is limited to 15.
